A Zenbooks Employee Experience

My Time with Zenbooks

Hello! My name is Shane, and I have been with Zenbooks since February of 2018 as a Staff Accountant. I graduated from Algonquin College with an advanced diploma in Business Administration - major in Accounting.

The original plan was to immediately transfer to university as a 3rd year Bachelor of Commerce student, but when the opportunity to work for Zenbooks as a full-time staff came up, I deferred my schooling plans until 2020 because I believed that being able to work for a forward-thinking accounting firm will set me up greatly for the future. The ability to use the latest technology available for accountants was a big draw for me.

With Zenbooks, I handle a wide range of tasks which includes personal and corporate taxes, managing financial documents, bookkeeping, reporting, and software integration. I am also being trained to do payroll, advisory, and financial system migration.

When Eric shared that he’s going to be working with Colin in a start-up accounting firm specializing in cloud-based technology, hearing how they would operate and what their processes are sounded very fascinating.

Looking back to the time I was in college, I have always been interested in what the future of the accounting field looks like. I read a lot of articles talking about the use of cloud software, artificial intelligence, automation, and even blockchain.

Many were saying that accounting will soon be obsolete, or that human bookkeepers and accountants will be replaced by robots, but I thought that those technologies will only eliminate the boring and repetitive tasks that we already dread in doing while allowing us to provide meaningful services to our clients in a more efficient manner.

I believed that the use of technology in accounting will have big benefits to accountants, clients, and other stakeholders alike.

Thus, when Eric shared that he’s going to be working with Colin in a start-up accounting firm specializing in cloud-based technology, hearing how they would operate and what their processes are sounded very fascinating.

My time with Zenbooks has been awesome!

I have learned so much career-wise while completely working remotely. My co-workers and I might not be in the same room, but they are one click away if I have questions or if I want to share a joke – thanks to our virtual office.

The idea of getting to do my part in protecting our planet by eliminating the use of paper sounds like a win-win situation for me too. I mostly work from home, but I have the option of working in a café, library, cottage, or even out of the country. With the utilization of the internet and cloud-based software, Zenbooks allowed me to work in the Philippines for two months. They even covered my airfare costs!

I was getting paid to work while being able to visit my relatives and see some popular destinations in my free time. Who would not love that?

The perk of working remotely is nice because I get to miss all of the commutes – especially the rush hour traffic – and my schedule is very flexible to accommodate my hectic personal life.

I am grateful that I can spend more time with my wife, Leah, and our mischievous (yet very cute) puppy also does not get left home alone all day. His name is Yogi, by the way, which is an anagram of our last name. ;P
